To evaluate individual risks to exposures in the workplace, information from the HRA is combined with information from epidemiological research on particular occupations and exposures, reference values like occupational exposure limits and other available statistics. The outcome of this evaluation is a document that categorizes employees according to their level and type of exposures. This is then used to advise what measures need to be put in place to control, minimize or eliminate hazards faced by this category of employees. This evaluation also advises the type of medical assessments as well as frequency required for conducting these assessments.
The steps in an occupational risk exposure evaluation include:
-
identification of occupational health hazards (through the HRA)
-
analysis of how the hazard may affect the worker via a literature review
-
identification of workers or group of workers exposed to specific hazards
-
identification of individuals and groups with special vulnerabilities
-
evaluation of available hazard prevention and control measures
-
making conclusions and documenting the findings of the assessment
-
periodic review and reassessment if necessary
